SAN JOSE, CALIF. — The 2022-23 NBA regular season will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 18, with teams traveling to stadiums around the country to play against other teams in their home venue!
This upcoming season will be the 77th of its kind, and will consist of 82 games per team. The season will kick off with a doubleheader, two games played in rapid succession, broadcasted on the TNT network. The teams that will be playing are the Philadelphia 76ers against the Boston Celtics, reigning champions of the Eastern Conference. The second game will be played by the Los Angeles Lakers versus the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center.
In the NBA, there are two conferences: Western and Eastern, which both contain 15 teams organized into three divisions. In total, there are 30 teams that play every regular season. The champions of the Western Conference are the iconic Golden State Warriors. In the past eight years, the Warriors won six conference titles, four championships, and five divisional titles.
High expectations are set for the Golden State Warriors by their fans, who are anticipating yet another championship. The Golden State Warriors would enjoy home court advantage if they outperformed their finals opponent during the regular season and advanced to the finals as expected. This is especially thrilling for Bay Area fans, given the Warriors play their home games at the Chase Center in San Francisco. In the 2016-17 and 2021-22 finals, the team also had home court advantage.
However, just two weeks before the start of the season, the team encountered an issue On Oct. 7, a video of power forward Draymond Green punching shooting guard Jordan Poole was leaked by an unknown source. It has been confirmed by ESPN that Green has privately apologized to Poole and the entire team, and will be on a break indefinitely. He is expected to play in the season opener.
Freshman Anh Dinh comments, “I’m curious how this video will affect the Warriors and all their future activities.”
“I’m excited to see how the Golden State Warriors will play this season, and I definitely have high expectations for them. I’m not quite sure how to feel about the video situation but I do hope that the both of them can resolve it,” said freshman Amy Chau.
Sophomore Juliana Alabilla exclaims, “I can’t wait to see how all of the teams do this season!”
The most highly anticipated week in the entire season for fans is the NBA Rivals Week, occurring the week of Jan. 23. This feature will include 11 games over five days, and will be entirely focused on the different rivalries in the NBA. One of the most awaited games is the Lakers at Celtics. Both teams have the record of 17 NBA championships, and have played against each other 12 times, the most out of all the other teams in the association.
The end of the 77th regular season will be on April 9, 2023. Seven games will be played that day in each conference with one interconference match between the Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards. There will be one victor per conference, who will be awarded the title of Conference Champion. The two Conference Champions will then proceed to the NBA Finals. The winner of that game will be granted the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.
