SAN JOSE, CALIF.— Class of 2028 freshmen class officers have been elected and ready to take on the responsibilities of their grade here at Silver Creek High School.
As the school year began, the incoming freshmen had a task to determine who they would let lead their class. The candidates worked hard on their campaigns trying to show their commitment to this job. As the votes were finalized on Monday, Aug. 19, the morning announcements revealed the winners.
Skyla Heng as president, Abigail Miles as vice president, Katia Tran as secretary, Larry Meas as treasurer and Kha Nguyen as spirit leader. The wait was over and their work had begun.
“It felt really good and validating to win. I was honestly quite nervous going against four other wonderful candidates so winning really helped my self esteem. I wanted to become an officer because I really want to make our first highschool year as memorable as possible,” Miles stated.
As the welcome back rally was approaching, the officers had to create their props to display in the x-quad, a class chant and get the class of 2028 excited for this fun event. Tran, expressed that she had a rush of many different emotions throughout the whole process. She explains, “ I felt excited but it was a lot of stress because it was our first year. It’s a lot of work, commitment, and time consuming but I knew it would make me happy once I saw my class enjoying the rally once it was done.”
The officers prepared and worked hard on their props at Tran’s house throughout the week. Giving each other different jobs when working on the poster, communicating ideas with one another and spending quality time bonding due to the fact they would be working alongside each other for their freshman year.
Club rush was another major event that happened during the beginning of the school year. During the three-day event, the officers explored different tables to branch out into to start off freshman year. Many popular clubs like Interact, Polynesian and Vietnamese Student Association caught the officers eye which led them to sign up. Other than their passion for being leaders, they found clubs they were excited about and passionate for.
Even though these officers are very new to the high school experience, they have set goals that they are excited to accomplish. Heng emphasizes, “I want to make our class more spirited and be that person that they look up to/look at at rallies and inspire them to be a part of class spirit.”
