SAN JOSE, CALIF.— With the release of “A Minecraft Movie”, people have been buying tickets to see it on the big screen left and right, which leaves one question, was it really worth all the hype?: To me it didn’t, but it wasn’t a total disaster.
“A Minecraft Movie” is an adventure/action and comedy film based on the extremely popular game, “Minecraft”. The movie follows the typical portal fantasy niche where the main character(s) somehow get stuck in another world and have to get stronger or find a way home. In this case, besides Steve who willingly went into the Overworld using the Orb of Dominance, Henry, Garret, Dawn, and Natalie all find themselves stuck in the Overworld after stumbling across the orb.

The movie itself is decent for a kids movie, but it isn’t a great movie altogether. The plot was a little bland and predictable and the only saving grace was that it’s Minecraft. Watching the movie you already know how it’s going to play out and end. There’s not a lot of originality, but that doesn’t hurt the movie too much since it had to be as accurate as possible to the game and it’s a kids movie. A lot of people were complaining about how the movie was live action with cgi instead of 3D animation since Minecraft is basically fully made up of cube shaped blocks, although I feel that the movie being live action didn’t really take away from the experience.
On various media platforms the Minecraft movie had blown up not because of the movie itself, but because of a joke going around. The joke started off as people just yelling out “chicken jockey” when the scene of a Garret fighting the chicken jockey shows up and clapping at various scenes in the movie to people throwing popcorn along with yelling out “chicken jockey”. Despite the fact that throwing popcorn isn’t really the nicest thing to do, it got the Movie attention and in turn more people started to buy tickets to go see the photo. My theater had people that did this and it was pretty funny, but I didn’t really like how there was popcorn in my hair afterwards.
On the other hand, Thuong-Kiet Nguyen, a freshman at Silver Creek, thought the movie was great. “It was a good movie and I especially enjoyed it because it was Minecraft. I think people critique the movie too much. It’s just a kids movie and I appreciated the movie for what it was.”
With all this said I still did enjoy the movie and being able to go to the theatre and watch it on the big screen. Even though the movie wasn’t that interesting it’s still nice to be able to watch a movie based on one of my favorite games.
