SAN JOSE, CALIF.— Megan Obis takes her turn in the spotlight as the lead in “She Kills Monsters” while overcoming her stage fright all in one go.

Obis is a senior at Silver Creek High School and eighteen years old. Obis has faced numerous challenges, but they’ve shaped her into a resilient individual determined to embrace life.

Growing up, Obis struggled with self esteem and identity, often questioning her role in life. Over time, she found the confidence to express herself.

“I used to question if I was funny or boring, but now I have a strong sense of who I am,” Obis said.

A defining moment came during a three-week tech theater project. Obis and her team created large paper mâché dragon heads. The work was physically demanding, but the sense of accomplishment was worth the effort.

“It was mentally taxing and physically exhausting,” she said.Seeing the progress on something so big made me feel proud.”

Obis’s experience with depression also led to growth. A TikTok post about choosing productivity over suffering shifted her mindset.

“I realized, either way in life, I’m gonna suffer, so might as well suffer being productive, working towards the person I want to be,” Obis said.

This moment inspired her to focus on her goals, particularly in drama. She also draws inspiration from Gabrielle Koizumi, the Drama teacher, a role model who balances a successful career and family.

“I want to be like her one day, someone who has it all together.” Obis said.

Due to this inspiration, Obis decided to audition for a lead role in a new production by Silver Creek’s Drama class. Obis got the role which she was very proud of Obis was also Ms. Darbus in High School Musical which tested her comfort zone.

Obis’s impact goes beyond her personal goals. At the Boys & Girls Club, she works with children, making a difference in their lives by offering guidance and support.

“I’ve seen kids hanging out alone, and I make an effort to talk to them. It feels great knowing I helped them make friends,” she said.

At school, Obis uses humor to create a positive environment, especially during lunch.

Despite her struggles, Obis remains focused on personal growth. She’s learned to see setbacks as opportunities to improve and shape her future.
