SAN JOSE CALIF.—Katie Le, the historian in Lion Dance Club, shares her journey as a lion dancer.
Lion Dance Club (LDC) is a fun club to join if students are interested in dancing, it involves a ton of activities and events like going around to perform for Lunar New Year and festivals with friends and members.

In LDC, everyone gets together to practice Lion dancing and learn instruments. Anyone can decide if they want to know how to dance, learn instruments, or do both. There’s many types of dance routines on LDC that they learn which also come with stunts. There’s also many instruments that they learn how to play, such as cymbals, drums, or gong. These activities are fun but dancing or playing an instrument at first can be difficult, but once they get the hang of it, it becomes very fun. There’s also a ton of skills to discover and learn and just overall have fun.
Le decided to run for historian in LDC because at the time she didn’t have that much experience. She applied for a position as a historian so she thought that it would be a perfect fit for her since she also enjoys editing or taking photos in general. During her freshman year of high school, she took a yearbook as an elective and she is currently taking photography in her junior year, so she found she can put her skills to great use as a historian.
The most fun part she enjoys about being a historian is taking photos and getting to capture the fun memories that take place in LDC. She finds it really fun to capture this year’s memories and be able to look back with the club.
During her time as a historian, the least fun part for her is learning a new skill and not getting it right away. Although she does feel this way, she doesn’t think it makes it a bad thing. She thinks feeling this way can be a motivating factor to try harder and get better at the skill.
Le’s Highlight of the year is during the Tết season. It is the biggest event for them because they get to perform in front of crowds and travel to different locations to perform. She gets to be around her friends basically all day enjoying what she loves doing, it is super fun even though it could be exhausting at times.
“Join LDC to learn new skills, be out of your comfort zone, make memorable memories, and most
important, new friends!” Says Le, who is a junior at Silver Creek.
Outside of school, in her freetime she likes to go on hikes with her cousins. She also enjoys just walking in the neighborhood with her sister. She occasionally likes to draw or color! She enjoys it and could color for hours because it’s “super fun” and relaxing for her. She also cooks and bakes simple foods like cookies and pastas.
Everyone should consider joining LDC for meeting new friends and tons of fun events to attend and go dance. It is better to bring a friend along to capture memories and fun events during Lunar New Years and events.
