Was Playboi Carti’s Album Worth the Five Year Wait?

By Kenneth Phan and Bao Nguyen

SAN JOSE, CALIF.—Carti’s new album “MUSIC” finally dropped after five years and after a lot of delays, so what do Silver Creek students think of the album?

Jordan Terrell Carter, otherwise known as Playboi Carti, makes music that falls under the category of trap, hip-hop and punk-rap. Around April 2017, he became a sensational rapper and had many big hits because of his uniqueness compared to traditional hip-hop rap during those years. We consider him the creator of the genre of rage rap and he had a uniqueness of beats to his music compared to other rappers. He was an alternative and a great one at that. His previous albums were all big hits and this gained him the reputation of a genius in the rap scene.

Kenneth Phan would consider himself an avid listener of Playboi Carti and this genre of music and with this in mind, he gives his thoughts on the Playboi Carti album, “MUSIC.” The album did have some good songs on there, but there were more okay songs than there were good songs. The songs he enjoyed on the album are “CRUSH”, “K POP”, “RATHER LIE”, “TRIM”, “OLYMPIAN”, and “WE NEED ALL DA VIBES”.

Most of the songs that were good had a feature on them and the songs he made himself were alright. Those songs that he enjoyed were different then all the other songs that were on the album. Those songs had something that stuck out maybe due to the features he had on the songs. They were different, they had catchy beats that you could vibe to and much more listenable singing and rapping as it’s not too loud and obnoxious. The rest of the songs on the album were mostly similar sounding as most of the songs had very obscure, loud, and vibrant beats with a lot of rage and yelling.

On the other hand, Bao Nguyen, who doesn’t listen to as much Carti as Kenneth, thought the album was pretty 3underwhelming and finds most of the songs on “MUSIC” pretty bad. A chunk of the album feels rushed and just not on par with his earlier works. He really liked past Carti albums like “Whole Lotta Red” and “Die Lit and would listen to songs on those albums a lot, but as Carti kept delaying this album and the songs got old he stopped listening to Carti as much as he used to.

To Nguyen, the five years that Carti fans waited for an album to drop were wasted. Since the album was delayed over and over, hype for the album grew and when the album released it didn’t live up to its expectations. There are a few exceptions like “TRIM” and “CRANK” because they don’t feel rushed and sound like there was genuine effort put into the and “TRIM”’s feature with Future, another famous rapper, helped it out a lot.

Not everybody thinks the album was bad though. “The album honestly isn’t as bad as people say it is. There are a lot of good songs and features and even though his old albums are definitely better than this one, it’s still a good album,” Jaydon Tongson, a freshman at Silver Creek, said.

Overall, both Nguyen and Phan thought that Carti’s new album is just a normal album with nothing too special. There are some songs that stand out more than others and are more listenable, but it could be a much better album. There were songs in there that felt like slob just put together quickly for the sake of lengthening the album to make it seem worth the five year wait. Most of the songs people enjoyed were songs that had features with popular artists in them, instead of him in the song alone to make it more symbolic and special.
