Grunge is one of the most well-known and listened-to alternative rock subgenres of music. Emerging in Seattle in the late 1980s, this genre is a mix and crossover between punk rock and heavy metal. To Isla, grunge has played a huge part in her life now. Her love for grunge was introduced to her when she was young when a family member was playing multiple songs of the genre.

Out of all albums, “Jar of Flies” by Alice in Chains is her favorite album. She states when she first listened, it “felt like an out-of-this-world experience.” “I could never get tired of listening to this album,” mentioned Gonzalez. Gonzalez reveals that Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and Stone Temple Pilots are her favorite bands. She says she “relates to their lyrics” the most and “could listen to their songs on repeat.” Gonzalez’s top five songs are “Sappy” by Nirvana, “Rotten Apple” and “Nutshell” by Alice in Chains, “Big Empty” by Stone Temple Pilots, and “Black” by Pearl Jam.

She describes her love for the music genre as something she “loves unconditionally.” Gonzalez says that every grunge vocalist she knows “has an outstanding voice. That mixed with the meaningful and strong lyrics has changed my perspective on music,” Gonzalez added. She says that listening to grunge makes her feel “inspired and emotional,” and paying attention when listening “widens her imagination and thoughts.”
