SAN JOSE, CALIF.—Between the two biggest faces of rap, Drake and Kendrick, it’s a controversial topic on who is better in the rap industry.
Kenneth Phan believes Drake is a much better rapper compared to Kendrick. Aubrey “Drake” Graham also known as Drake was born on Oct. 24, 1986 in Toronto, California. So, how is Drake a better artist than Kendrick? Drake has diversity when making his music. He goes from rap to R&B to even speaking another language when creating music. Plus, Drake has many more hit songs compared to Kendrick. With some of his songs having billions of streams on spotify, even being the first rapper to hit 1 billion streams on spotify. He has shown incredible consistency when producing his music with hits after hits in his albums.
On the other hand, Bao Nguyen thinks Kendrick is a much better artist than Drake. Kendrick was born in Compton, California on June 17, 1987. He grew up in a high crime area of the city and began writing rhymes and songs as a teenager. Kendrick’s work has plenty of depth and storytelling. Take any of Kendrick’s songs and you’ll experience a unique story in that song.

Kendrick’s song, “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst” has many different perspectives from different people. Each verse is from a different person’s perspective, from both male and female perspectives. The third verse of the song is Kendrick contemplating death and where he stands in all of it. He wonders if he’s exploiting the people he sings about by using their situation for his song or if he’s actually doing something to help their predicaments.
After asking students around campus, people definitely have their own opinions regarding this. With some people saying Drake is much better or Kendrick is much better.
Kayla Lam, another senior at Silver Creek, makes the remark “Did Kendrick make Forever? I didn’t think so.” She says this because she thinks Forever is one of the best songs to come out which was made by Drake. Lam thinks Kendrick is unable to make music comparable to Drake.
“Although subjective, Drake is the better musical artist because Drake has this incomparable flow and beat that Kendrick just cannot perform. Drake’s music is enticing and makes me want to listen to him on repeat,” exclaims Lam.
Alex Nguyen thinks Kendrick is better than Drake. “What I like about his songs is the meaning behind them. When I listen to Kendrick’s songs I envision a story in my head as the song plays,” the freshman says.
Both of these artists are great, have a large supporting fanbase and produce well received music. They worked hard to reach where they are now and have also had a history of making music together, before they started to make diss tracks of each other.
