A Review on High School Musical A Night at the Theater

By Angelina Galeon and Rochelle Agpoon

SAN JOSE, CALIF.—Towards the end of last week, Silver Creek’s Drama classes performed High School Musical and we, Angelina Galeon and Rochelle Agpoon, will give an honest review for this first show of the year.

We went to the first opening night on Thursday, Feb. 27 that was presented by Gabrielle Koizumi, the Drama teacher here at Silver Creek. The cast for opening night was Koizumi’s fifth period class. The High School Musical logo was presented brightly on the back of the stage to welcome all the guests.

They had a live band performing as the background music. Silver Creek’s very own band had live music, being at the front of the stage acting like an orchestra pit. They were conducted by Mary- Kathryn Lee and we thought that they were amazing and added so much to the musical. Compared to the preview we watched during school, the live band added a kind of atmosphere, tying the whole thing together.

Although the band performed beautifully, it was hard to hear the voices of the actors and actresses. From the seat we were sitting in during the show (almost near the top of the seating arrangement), we could hardly hear the singing when the band joined in. We wish we could’ve heard more of their beautiful voices.

Besides this aspect, choreography was simple, yet precise! All the cast members danced on beat and in sync which showed their true dedication to this whole production. We could see that everyone on the stage was putting in their best effort to put on a great performance for the audience. Silver Creek High School’s drama department blew us away and made us appreciate the drama atmosphere even more!

While being in the audience we couldn’t really feel how the cast members felt while performing, so we decided to ask one. Maximino Vital, a freshman at Silver Creek High School and the actor for  Chad Danforth in Thursday’s musical, got to experience theatre life. The High School Musical show was his first real taste into the drama world and learned new things along the way.

“I felt really good since it was a new experience for me, being that it was my first ever musical performance, and it was really nice getting to learn the entire play and overall just having fun with my class,” Vital says.

As a freshman with not much experience in this field, he played a big role with many lines to memorize. This is not an easy feat. He wasn’t very nervous though because Vital said, “I felt like I knew most of the play already before we were about to debut.” He is one of the only main characters who is a freshman except for Neha Chilukuru who plays Sharpay Evans.

Overall, our first experience with Silver Creek High School’s drama class was great. We look forward to watching more productions in the future!
