San Jose, CALIF- As Silver Creek High School wrestling season continues, the varsity team has competed at two tournaments over their winter break.
During winter break, Silver Creek wrestlers competed, tested their skills and pushed themselves to new heights. These events build experience and momentum for many seniors as their season continued to end day-by-day”
Gilberto Rodriguez wrestled Nick Buzolish at Lincoln High School on Dec. 21 taking fifth at his second tournament of the season. The team is not going to compete at weight, bumping Rodriguez a weight class up. Rodriguez reflected from the tournament, “I wish that I would’ve placed higher overall just done better but you just gotta let it go and move on; bumping up a weight class had to be the hardest part of the tournament. Additionally I was sick, with it also being my birthday.” To mentally prepare Rodriguez preparing mentally reviews his film to understand his mistakes; entering in competition understanding it is what it is as many more tournaments are ahead, he hopes to progress to end his career as a state qualifier.
Another wrestler, Santos Tizoc, only a freshman, placed third at a tournament held at Sierra Nevada. “Bouncing back from third was tough after losing in the semis.”
Tizoc’s mentality to place high at tournaments helps him confidently hang with tougher competitors giving him a comeback. While placing first place at two separate varsity tournaments over the winter break, it was not so easy for Tizoc having trouble weight cutting, “The toughest part was definitely the weight cut a day before weigh ins but I felt like I managed my weight well for day two at Reno.”. Tizoc came in as the underdog and unbreakable mindset, upsetting the third seed and securing his placement on the podium with the record of 19-1.
