SAN JOSE, CALIF.—Silver Creek students review The Weeknd’s new album “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” which released on Jan. 31, featuring other artists across all listening platforms.
Abel Tesfaye, professionally known as “The Weeknd,” is a Canadian songwriter known for his R&B music and his explicit songs. He recently became the first artist to surpass two billion streams on six of his songs this year and has just performed at the 67th Grammy Awards. Tesfaye is also the founder of his record label, XO Records, and has just recently released his final album, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” featuring artists such as Lana Del Ray, Future, and others.
Tesfaye’s new album, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” is his sixth studio album, lengthening 84 minutes, and released through XO Records and Republic Records. This is the last album in The Weeknd’s trilogy, beginning with 2020’s “After Hours” and 2022’s “Dawn FM.” It is also the finale under Tesfaye’s stage name, “The Weeknd” as he will be retiring the name and creating music under his real name.
“Hurry Up Tomorrow” will also include a film, a suspense thriller starring Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. The film will be released to theaters on May 16.
• Wake Me Up
“Wake Me Up” is the opening and the first song of “Hurry Up Tomorrow”, bringing a mesmerizing, haunting, and spiritual tone to the end of an era. Freshman Isla Gonzalez states that out of all the songs from the new album, she “liked Wake Me Up best.” “I liked the spooky dark beat it had but it was also angelic at the same time,” commented Gonzalez. She adds that “the outro was good”, as it delivers an oblivious transition to the next song, “Cry For Me.”
• Open Hearts
“Open Hearts” is the album’s seventh song and reveals the healing and struggle of opening up to love again. The lyrics illustrate someone who has experienced emotional pain and is uncertain about falling in love again. Freshman Brandyn Ngo states that all of The Weeknd’s songs are very good and have a similar style. From the new album, he reveals that “Open Hearts” was his favorite song because “the rhythm and beats are catchy.” “I also prefer slower, softer songs over rap and louder music, which makes this song stand out to me,” Ngo added.
