Required ID for Free Breakfast and Lunch

SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Starting on Wednesday, Jan. 22, Silver Creek High School students are required to show their ID to ensure only one free breakfast and lunch.

Until recently, students could just take their food without any requirements but with the newly implemented rule, the lunch lines seem more crowded and slower. Joel Robison assumes they are enforcing this in an effort to “try and have a better understanding of how much food we need to distribute,” although he mentioned he was not the most informed on the topic.

There is always extra food at the end of break and lunch so introducing IDs could help our school keep track of exactly how much food they should be supplying.

“Schools aren’t in the business of turning students down, especially when it comes to food,” Robison added. This means if students wanted to get more than one meal, if they simply just asked, the lunch staff would most likely hand it over.

Junior and lunch staff helper Justin Le said, “It’s more chaotic because the scanner doesn’t work sometimes, which makes the line go slower.” However, Le expressed he does not have too much of an opinion on whether this rule should be kept or removed.  It seems like the rule is not a major issue for the staff. The only complaint students have is the line going slower.

For students who lost or forgot their student ID, there is an app to help called “Minga.” The “Minga” app allows students quick access to their school IDs. Downloading and signing into the app is simple. All you have to do is search “Minga” in the App Store, sign in with your school email and password and then click “View ID” at the bottom of the app and your ID will appear. This quick action will bring up a barcode that the lunch staff will scan before handing over the food.
