SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Silver Creek High School students had the opportunity to discover new interests and courses at the elective fair.
The elective fair allowed students to learn about the different options that are offered at Silver Creek High School. This helps students decide on what they plan to take next school year, having a taste of what the elective class consists of. Another factor about the elective fair is that it gives students a chance to learn about skills possibly needed in their future career plans. Silver Creek offers a wide variety of courses like STEM, Art and English courses that could help students with their major.
Having the electives can also let students prepare for their future and see if this is something they are interested in pursuing as a career, depending on the class they want to take. As well as develop skills that they can apply to future studies. Taking electives could also just be a learning experience and be informed about the class.
For instance, at Creek there’s an Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature class that consists of analyzing poems, books, practicing your writing skills and learning other varieties of topics. The class allows students to understand deeper levels of literature which helps them with their own writing and coming up with their own themes and ideas. This is a good class to take because it would look good on your transcript along with helping you advance your analyzing skills.
Melanie Prince, a senior, says “ Last year there was a 99% passing rate,” this means that the class prepares students well for the AP literature test.
Another elective students can take is Art class, which shows different art techniques and styles students can learn. This class exercises students’ creativity and allows them to express themselves through their artwork. Painting, drawing and crafting are offered but if students want to progress their art abilities they can take the AP Art classes or the next level of the art class.
Taking an art class as an elective gives students the chance to expand their knowledge of the different variations of the different art forms.
“Overall a really fun experience and gives you opportunities to do cool creative stuff that you might’ve not been able to do at home,” said Natasha Characheragkha, a senior from Silver Creek. The class helps you incorporate different art methods into your future art pieces.
There’s also an Ethnic Studies elective class which is about understanding different cultural groups and their history. This class teaches people about certain topics on one’s cultural backgrounds. It helps understand systems of oppression and why they are used and also shows economic power and social power is being used in society. It reveals identities and one’s self. This is through diverse authors, activities, music, and documentaries.
It helps people to explore who they are and brings students out of their comfort zone and to be able to connect with people. Cesar Juarez one of the U.S History teachers highlights, “In this class students have an opportunity to express themselves and the struggles that their community is facing.”
As for another elective, there’s Sociology which is a class that is more focused on social issues and social problems like what’s going on in our world. Sociology talks about racism, gun violence, abuse and other societal aspects. The class shows videos, documentaries, and social experiments that show students the different aspects of sociological studies. Kylee Gonzalez, the teacher of Sociology says, “Sociology will allow you to think deeper about society around you.”
Hence the elective fair at Silver Creek High school allows students to find different options and alternatives for their classes next year. Having the fair helps students get an overall view of what is offered at Creek.
