SAN JOSE, CALIF.—Matcha is becoming one of the most commonly ordered cafe drinks worldwide, leading to a surge of many shops opening here in San Jose.
Matcha, a traditional Japanese green tea powder made from finely ground dried green tea leaves, has a unique taste that may seem bitter to some. However, there are plenty of sweeteners available—such as vanilla, honey, sugar, syrup, agave and condensed milk. Matcha has been proven to provide health benefits, it lowers blood pressure and boosts metabolism. It can be enjoyed as a simple tea, or you may add milk to make a creamy matcha latte.
When evaluating matcha, its color is an essential indicator of quality. High-quality, ceremonial-grade matcha typically has a deep or bright green color. Ceremonial grade is the highest level of matcha because of its role in Japanese tea ceremonies. For the best experience, try to avoid matcha with a dull green color or yellowish undertones as they often suggest a lower quality!
The Silver Creek Plaza is home to Izumi Matcha’s first location. Ever since the store has blown up on TikTok, both the Silver Creek and Cupertino stores have gained significant popularity! People have even reported waiting in increasingly long lines for a single drink.
Izumi Matcha’s most popular drink is arguably their Crème Brulee Matcha, which also happens to be my favorite drink from them. The drink is priced at $7.50 and is considered a shake, so it is quite thick compared to the rest of their drinks. The place does an excellent job of balancing the signature bitterness of matcha while adding a subtle sweetness with their cream. By looking at the color of their drinks, you can tell that the powder they use is good quality!
For a non-dairy drink, I totally recommend their Lychee Matcha Tea. It’s definitely one of their sweeter options, but you’re still able to taste the matcha. Also, you can ask for an additional matcha shot free of charge!

Claire Tran, a senior at Silver Creek and a lover of their matcha quality, said, “Izumi Matcha is the best matcha spot!” Those who especially enjoy the quality can purchase the powder they use there.
Matcha Cafe Maiko, located in Westfield Valley Fair Mall is another amazing option. It’s especially great for beginners who may not be used to matcha’s traditional bitterness as it is on the sweeter side. They specialize in desserts including sundaes, frappes, floats and soft serves.
I highly recommend their Matcha-Vanilla Mix Soft Serve to those who are interested in a creamy kick to their matcha. Additionally, since the stand is located inside a mall, you’re able to quench your thirst while doing your shopping!
