SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Silver Creek High School should have an open campus so students have more freedom!
An open campus would be more beneficial than a closed campus because it encourages students to be responsible and to have good time management when they leave school. Students would have to leave and make sure they are back in time for class, which gives them more responsibility and pressure to take accountability for the actions
I would enjoy leaving school sometimes as a change in environment would help me destress and refresh my mind. Being able to leave school can give students a break and bring down their stress. This could make students more productive and more focused during class.
Patrick Tran, a senior at Silver Creek High School, says “I think having an open campus will make me feel less trapped.” This further reinforces the idea that having an open campus here at Silver Creek will give students more freedom and space to clear their mind from academic stressors.
However, there are downsides to having an open campus during school hours. The school provides students healthy lunches, but having an open campus could make students feel more inclined to eat unhealthy food due to the increased options for cheap fast food.
On top of that our school officials may find it hard to ensure everyone’s safety if they were to go on and off campus.
“While open campus seems fun, as an adult responsible for student’s safety, it opens a lot of risks. Students’ safety is a top priority always,” says Erica King, an administrator here at Silver Creek High School. It is safe to assume that staff and admin think that a closed campus is much better for Silver Creek.
There are also many risks of open campus as well. More dangers could happen as anything could happen to the students whilst they are off campus. Students could be harmed, individuals could enter the school without anybody’s discretion as well.
A closed campus may be a much safer option and administrators may want a closed campus for the students’ safety, but students would rather have an open campus. I also think an open campus’s benefits outweigh the benefits of a closed campus.
An open campus here at Silver Creek would help out the students immensely. It reduces students’ stress and teaches responsibility. If students become less stressed, they will perform better during class time. That why I think we should have an open campus here at Silver Creek.
