SAN JOSE, CALIF.—Senior Gursher Singh sets the precedent for how students can involve themselves at Silver Creek through various clubs and sports.

Beginning in his freshman year, Singh actively sought to be a part of and contribute to the school community. This attribute is relatively new to him as dating back to both elementary and middle school, he considered himself not a very outgoing person and rather timid more than anything. “After middle school, you know, high school coming out of COVID it really made me more out there and outgoing as a person,” Singh said.

His outgoing nature is a main motivator for him to join the variety of clubs he has. “I like meeting people and joining is a really good way of meeting people and making friends,” he said. This coalition of clubs includes the French club which he is the president of, the Drama club where he is the secretary, and Creek Di Shaan (C.D.S.) where he is also the secretary.

The French club has been inactive for the most part, but the other two clubs remain active and it is in those where he is more actively involved.”I try to be very involved. Whenever we perform, I’m part of the performances. I’m there for all the meetings and I invite other people to come with us,” Singh stated about his role in C.D.S. As for Drama Club, he says that he helps with making the marketing plan for the plays, creating otherwise publicity and other decisions of the like. Singh states, however, that “most of the credit goes to [Gabrielle] Koizumi and Maddy [McFatridge].”

On top of his involvement in those clubs, he was also a part of the school’s swimming team in both his sophomore and junior years where he was on junior varsity. In his senior year, Singh will not be swimming despite that he “would really love to.” His reasoning for his absence this year is due to it being his last year and there being “a lot of stuff that I want to rather focus on.” He does not believe he would be able to properly manage himself with the addition of swim to his schedule

Tech Theater is a class that he has taken for 2 years now at Silver Creek. Most of the work for this class takes place and is done during school hours, there are certain required tasks that are only able to be completed after school. This includes several opportunities to volunteer at events ran at the school by the drama department or any other events like band concerts. During these events, tech theater students are put in charge of many different things depending on the event. However, the most common, and Gursher’s favorite thing to do when volunteering, is selling concessions to the attendees.

While Singh’s heavy involvement in all of these extracurriculars makes the impression that he likely has a frantic and busy schedule, he says that he gets by in his day-to-day life by simply “just going with the flow.” He does know his limit however and has said he does not want to step into any more extracurriculars. Whenever he does have downtime, he enjoys reading and writing the most in order to relax.

Singh advocates for students to be involved in extracurriculars as he has throughout his time. “Just join,” he says, but also adds that one should “make sure your time management is top tier.”
