Silver Creek Students Giving Their Opinions on Thanksgiving

SAN JOSE, CALIF.—Many Students at Silver Creek believe Thanksgiving is a holiday worth celebrating due to the recognition of value upon one another. While few students think the way it’s celebrated isn’t respectful.

Many Raiders of Silver Creek love to enjoy time with family and friends during Thanksgiving As its a way to acknowledge and value someone. However 3 out of the 10 students’ responses from an informal survey said they disliked the popular holiday due to the way it’s celebrated.

Mai Le said, “I celebrate Thanksgiving because it’s one of my family traditions. It’s important to them as well as me because I get to spend time together with each other as well as go in a circle and say what we are thankful for.”

However, while some families are brought together by the holiday; others do not celebrate this holiday. For example when interviewing Khiem Nguyen he had a rather interesting reason.

Nguyen states, “I do not celebrate Thanksgiving because Thanksgiving promotes the hunting or killing of turkeys which causes businesses to buy more of the turkey stock. This might lead to a decline in the turkey population.”

To elaborate, Nguyen states that killing turkeys will give stores an increase in demand for turkeys. This could cause a problem leading to over-hunting. Resulting in the long run to impact on nature or wildlife

Le states that her family has been celebrating Thanksgiving annually and her family does activities like saying who and what they are thankful for and allows them to be grateful for one another and to build a stronger bond.

Junior Ace Aclibon said, “Me and my family celebrate because we enjoy coming together as a family and really saying what we are thankful for.” Aclibon describes how they get joy from the holiday. Aclibon and his family coming together causes them to bond with each other and strengthen or build relationships.

My opinion on Thanksgiving is that this holiday should be celebrated annually throughout families and friends. Throughout interviews and even celebrating myself, it allows families to get together and build stronger bonds and friendships throughout your relatives.

From last year’s Thanksgiving, the traditional turkey was cooked for over 3 hours with turkey stuffings, potatoes and many different vegetables.
