SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Geselle Alferez, a junior, has taken initiative by creating a club at Silver Creek High School dedicated to spreading positivity and kindness toward children fighting cancer.

Courage Against Cancer is one of the many new clubs joining the Silver Creek campus this year. “A passion club where we all believe we could make change, towards an ongoing issue,” Alferez said. She notes that since there is never an exact cure yet, the mission of her club is to make the best efforts that they can through donation drives, care packages, and fundraisers all going toward funding  cancer research and to cancer patients. 

She is also a Youth Advisory Board officer (another club at Creek), she is familiar with joining organizations and clubs that have large associations with making a difference in its community. Her motivation for running the club relates to her passion for making change. She states, “Yes you can make a club, but the important part is that you can make a difference with that club.”

Her shaping the mission of Courage Against Cancer alludes to wanting to make a club for awareness and one that makes a significant difference, but also, unique in its own sense. With several other health and wellness clubs already being present at Creek, Alferez wanted to make something individual to their club but also broad enough to reach opportunities beyond   Creek. She states she is getting her footing for CAC just as a club at Creek, but would like to eventually span out in the long run as a non-profit for the San Jose community and beyond.

Alongside being a club president and holding other officer positions, she is also on the girls’ field hockey team. Though having lots on her plate to manage thus far into the year, she always knows when to ask for help from her team. Through open communication, she balances whatever she can do throughout her week. 

Outside of being a student, her hobbies include creative ways to fill up her time. She commonly paints, draws, and does animations for her youtube channel, which has amassed over 20,000 subscribers.

For her plans after high school, she is not exactly sure which college she would like to attend, but she hopes to pursue something related to the medical field. However, she remarks even though she is currently interested in the medical field, she would have started CAC regardless due to her passions for advocating.
