Activities Director Resigned After Long Absence

SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Silver Creek’s Activities Director, Peter Chu, has been missing since the start of this school year and has now resigned.

Not only was he the activities director, but he also had to teach the leadership class. In his absence, the leadership elective class has been heavily impacted.

Being an activity comes with more than a handful of responsibilities and work. For a while, complications arose because all activity director responsibilities weren’t being done. Without Chu, other teachers have had to fill in for him, each doing a different job. Chu was responsible for planning school events such as Nonfire, rallies, lunchtime events, working with clubs and Homecoming.

“Without Mr. Chu all of leadership has extra work because Mr. Chu is gone. Everything is a lot less transparent and that makes the work even more stressful,” said Crystal Nguyen, a junior at Silver Creek.

Matthew Kim, a senior, said, “Everything being less transparent makes everything more complicated, ever since Mr. Chu left, leadership has gotten stricter.”

Nguyen and Kim share a common consensus of how Chu’s absence has left an overall negative influence. Chu was an important part of the leadership class and so with his seat left vacant, stress has built up among other branches besides leadership, causing a domino effect to many processes that in turn also slow down.

To get a new activities director there has been a process of interviews to check if an individual person meets the criteria for an ideal Activities Director.

“The qualities of the ideal person is if they already have experience organizing events and activities, works well with students, if they will give students their voice and feedback and if they dedicate their time to the job, having commitment to the classes and afterschool events,” said Assistant Principal, Lyra Hua.

Hua added: “there was a preference for internal candidates.” Meaning that people who are already working at this school are more desired.
