Lockers on Silver Creek Campus Promising To Benefit The Students

SAN JOSE, CALIF.— Students advocate that the addition of lockers on Silver Creek campus would be a huge relief and convenience to them, especially those who are avidly pushing for the district to implement them.

Polls from students of all grades, many have voiced how carrying around a heavy weight backpack all day is exhausting and causes major back aches. The addition of lockers would help resolve the issue of heavy books and bad posture.

Textbooks are not the only thing included in student belongings that are being lugged around school, but also emergency items such as pads and tampons, heavy-packed lunches or an extra change of clothes, especially if the student is involved with extracurricular activities.

Lizette Anaya, an 11th grader commented how lockers would allow “less students going in and out of parking lots to get things from cars, less stress on students for taking things home, and less responsibility from teachers to take care of students belongings.”

As the administrators are becoming stricter and enforcing rules such as not going into your car during school hours, students are forced to carry unnecessarily heavy items, due to the lack of area to place their belongings. Out of 24 students, 23 said that lockers would be extremely helpful and would result in happier students. They explained that the main reason they want a locker is because they struggle from back aches, pain, and strain, all due to carrying too many things in their backpack.

Over half of the students that were polled claimed that they believe the addition of lockers would help with their organization between classes. Loose papers often get scrunched and lost in the abyss of backpacks, never to be seen again. In order to prevent that, multiple folders or binders can suffice, but then again, add to the weight that students must carry around for over 6 hours.

Lockers can also be a fun way to personalize an item and make school a little bit more interesting. The lockers in the PE building that the school offers can be seen as bland and identical to each other. Having personal lockers can allow students to decorate and make them unique!
