SAN JOSE, CALIF- Pole Vault is back at Silver Creek High School after being gone since 2015! Silver Creek has a junior transfer student from Maryland, Mio Desclous, to thank!
Desclous has been an incredible athlete for many years! He has been doing track since middle school. He didn’t begin with pole vault though, Desclous started as a distance runner! He ran a speedy 5:52 mile in freshman year. Desclous though really got the inspiration to do pole vault on his own, his sister, Clara Desclous was a pole vaulting state champ in Maryland in 2019! Mio also has a great career himself! Previously in his sophomore year, he pole vaulted at the state meet in Maryland! He finished 4th at the state finals!
“I actually just love the sport. I want to get better at it all of the time.”
-Mio Desclous on His why, The whole reason why he does track and field and trains the way he does
Although quite new to California, Desclous loves it and doesn’t miss much from home. He mainly just misses his friends and loves life in California. Desclous in his first real meet this season, at the K-Bell Track and Field Classic, recorded a mark of 14 feet, a personal record in pole vault by a whole foot! This mark already sets him in second place in Silver Creek’s school records. This already qualifies him for the CCS meet, and one of the best invitational meets in the nation, the Arcadia Invitational. He hopes to make the state meet this season, and the chances look quite high.

He owes much of his success to his sister and his coaches. Desclous also explains that anyone can jump into a pole vault on their own. His advice to someone doing pole vault the first time is to find a good coach. Desclous is always driven to improve. “I actually just love the sport. I want to get better at it all of the time.” Desclous isn’t just a pole vault prodigy he is an incredible 400-meter runner as well. He dashes one lap on the track in 55 seconds. He hopes to run a 53 by the end of the season to qualify for CCS. Desclous was able to restart this program just by talking to coaches and communicating with the admin.
Desclous is incredibly excited about the track and field scene in California. California has one of the best competition pools in the world of track and field and Desclous is ready to take it on. Keep an eye out for the high-flying pole vaulter!
