SAN JOSE, CALIF.— Khoi Nguyen is a senior at Silver Creek High School and an active member of the school band performing at school showcases of music.
Nguyen first picked up the saxophone in the 5th grade. His journey began with the help of his father pushing him to pursue the instrument. Originally he was against the idea of playing the saxophone but as he improved his playing skills he was grateful that his father encouraged him to continue playing. Nguyen plays both tenor and alto saxophones but mostly plays the Tenor saxophone for the school band. Nguyen has participated in many performances ranging from school shows to public performances. Nguyen has also performed in the Tri Honors Music Society, an esteemed music performance event. He enjoys the thrill of performing on stage. He also enjoys listening to his fellow musicians playing alongside them. Nguyen says “When everything falls into place, it is nothing you can ever experience”. This feeling is what keeps him wanting to play
Nguyen’s musical interest does not stop at just playing instruments; he also enjoys a wide variety of music genres such as jazz, modern pop, and rock. He especially enjoys pop songs from the ’70s-’90s. The music he listens to has inspired him to take an interest in learning other instruments such as the guitar, drums, or bass guitar. He shows a peak of interest in picking up the guitar stating that “the guitar is its own instrument and for the most part doesn’t need other instruments to make it complete”.
Nguyen recommends to people who want to pick up any instrument to “find a way to make playing fun and enjoyable.” Nguyen believes that learning the instrument is the fun part of music and seeing yourself progressing provides the player with a sense of accomplishment that they will not forget. Nguyen also recommends that you surround yourself with someone who knows the instrument and learn from them in any way possible.
