Non-Binary Student in Oklahoma Dead After School Incident

SAN JOSE, CALIF. — On Feb. 7, a fight broke out at Owasso High School in Oklahoma between Nex Benedict, a non-binary student, and a group of students which led to their death.

On that day, Benedict was in the restroom with their friend and another group of students, who usually bully them. It escalated as the group was making fun of them and a fight started as Benedict was beaten up badly. The next day, they sadly passed, although the cause is not yet established.

This incident has caused many from the LGBTQ+ community to show their support. A quote from the statement released by the Benedict family says, “… the Benedict Family sent their child, Nex Benedict, to Owasso High School, trusting, like any parent or family member should be able to, that it was a safe environment for their loved one. Millions of parents across America make the same decision each and every morning.”

Safety usually isn’t the main doubt for if someone should send their child to school, but concern around safety has been increasing with this event and many others. Although now the LGBTQ+ community is seeing a rise in bullying, making parents concerned for their children. With the group being across the country, its effects are nationwide.

Thomas Nguyen, a freshman from Silver Creek High School says, “Bullying has been a problem and there are resources to help with that.” A great example is the wellness center which provides a place for students to feel relaxed and comforting during the school day. Bullying is a universal problem and resources are there for students to use and feel safe on campus.
