February is here and so is Black History Month

SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Stay informed on local Black History Month events and black owned businesses and restaurants in San Jose. 

For a little background, Black History Month was chosen to be in February in the United States because it is the birthday month of Frederik Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Douglass was a famous abolitionist who wrote “The Narrative of the life of Frederik Douglass’ ‘ and was a leader for the African American Civil Rights  Movement ; his exact date of birth is unknown but is most recognized as Valentines Day, Feb. 14. Lincoln abolished slavery and issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan.1, 1863. He was born on Feb. 12, 1809. 

Black History Month Awareness

Attend the first Annual Black Liberation Ball on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 7pm.- 11p.m. The ball will have a duration of four hours, located in ball A & B at San Jose University. The theme will be the “Wiz” and will be focused on dancing, talent shows, and just having fun. General Admission is $5.

Be in support of black owned restaurants! Jackie’s Place is a highly recommended soul food restaurant in San Jose. The menu’s most popular items include fried chicken, oxtails, peach cobbler, chili, seafood gumbo soup, and key lime pie. It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11a.m.-9p.m. Located on 840 N First St, San Jose. 

Mudai Ethiopian Restaurant is black -owned restaurant that serves authentic and traditional Ethiopian food. Popular items include sambussa, mudai salad, Timatim FitFit, and Lamb Tib sandwiches. The menu is quite affordable with each dish averaging from $10-$20. It is located 503 W San Carlos St, San Jose,CA 95126. 

Many people have been trying to find alternatives to Starbucks and Nirvana Soul is just the thing! The coffee beans are high quality and is rated the #1 coffee shop in San Jose. Prices range from $10-$20. You can buy coffee beans, lattes, teas, espresso, beer, wine, food and more. Their current specialties include dirty diana, the golden child, and honey lavender latte. Located on 315 S 1st St, San Jose. “I’ve been there before, the menu is very silly and has nice vibes.” said Silver Creek student Jessica Martinez. Very friendly and cozy environment with black owned owners. Be in support of your local black community and treat yourself!
