Silver Creek’s Latest Musical: Mean Girls!

By Jake Navarro

SAN JOSE, CALIF.– Silver Creek High School is producing a show of Mean Girls in March, starring sophomore Maddy McFatridge.

The story of “Mean Girls” follows Cady Heron transferring into a high school only to find herself amongst an elite group of students called “the Plastics.” The Plastics are a superficial group of girls made up of Regina George, Gretchen Wieners and Karen Smith who only care about clothes, themselves and popularity. “The most realistic part is being a new kid and how that kid was treated when she came in, she was ignored until she started to understand how to interact with people,” senior Arri Sumler says.

Gabriel Koizumi’s drama class is working with the band and tech theater electives to work on the music and costumes for the show. The PG-13 performance will take place on campus in Raider Hall. Tickets are $10 and you can buy them at our.show/creekmeangirls.

Koizumi herself takes serious care to make sure the show is as vibrant as possible. “If she wasn’t strict and had high expectations, nothing in the show would look good,” Sumler says. Students are expected to remember the previous day’s routine while still being on track for the current as well as knowing all the dances.

“Mean Girls,” both the show and movie, involve core themes such as popularity, peer pressure and bullying which all exist in a high school setting like Silver Creek’s. They are realistic themes, but very exaggerated for the show. “It’s very dramatic, things like that wouldn’t happen,” freshman Henry La says.

This musical has different vibes and themes than the other show produced at Silver Creek, “Frankenstein.” “Frankenstein” has a very old Roman, Gothic vibe and a horror theme whereas “Mean Girls” is a very modern tale with lots of comedy. The two, however, share a core theme of treating others with respect. Will you be watching “Mean Girls,” Raiders?
