SAN JOSE, CALIF.—Monday, Jan. 22 marked the abrupt closure of various teacher’s periods here at Silver Creek High School. Math 2 classes were affected, with Van Ly’s third period getting transferred to Hong Pun. Pun’s seventh period class was entirely disbanded, with the 25 student class being scattered, mostly to Ashley Rideout. One of Rideout’s classes had also been disbanded. Their classes have now become prep periods, with Ly now only teaching 5 classes. According to Ly, “They had 47 less students enroll in Math 2 this year, which allowed the board to do this. They wanted to fold classes in. Why they did it now, I don’t know” Affected teachers were given short notice, only being notified on the Wednesday the week before. This change was entirely out of left field and left everyone confused as to why.
Reaction to this change was largely negative, with the students and teachers equally expressing displeasure with the school board. Pun said “Terrible…Just terrible. I mean, I had such short notice and I am struggling to teach the topic and keep up”. Kyrie Tallod, a sophomore who had his class changed, stated that, “I hope I pass Mr. Pun’s class. That’s my only emotion. I probably would have passed Mrs. Ly’s class.” Students who were affected suffered teachers who had inconsistent knowledge about what to teach, as the teachers prepped for a different class of students then what they got. Ly’s third period had even sent emails to the principal asking her to reverse this change. Some students had their schedules of other classes swapped out too. Diagram of School map
