Students Sleep Schedules and Its Effect on Their Education

SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Due to the inefficient amount of sleep students get a night, they develop academic impropriety.

Most days of the week, we spend a significant amount of time at school. We students often have an overwhelming amount of school space; and in an effort to improve our grades, we work on homework for hours after school.

This affects the majority of students. Students are also using all of their energy to get themselves out of bed every morning to be present in school. Based on a student’s sleep pattern, their academic performance is impacted negatively. Monica Tran, a student here at Silver Creek says, “When I don’t get enough sleep I get tired, and I can’t focus in class, because I’m trying not to fall asleep.”

When students get a good amount of sleep, they do better in school. Without sleep, they experience a slower reaction time. Bad performances shown by students result in laziness and forgetfulness. “I get really stressed out and I usually can’t focus in my classes,” said Mashal Razai, also a student here at Silver Creek. Without a good amount of sleep, students’ mental health is affected badly. Examples of this can be irritation, anxiety, low esteem.

Students in their senior year say they are going to have “Senioritis”. This is a saying when seniors fall behind in their work and no longer have motivation for school. As all of their assignments start to pile up and finals get in the way, students become stressed and look forward to the end of the school year because of procrastination.

Procrastination is a big problem for us students. We feel lazy but still find a way to continue working in order to pass. When students receive poor grades, some say the cause of this is the teacher’s assignments, but it really may just be inefficient sleep schedules. Students who sleep under an amount of six hours are shown to do worse. This lack of sleep restricts you from focusing on your studies.
