SAN JOSE, CALIF — The upcoming season for wrestling is starting on Oct. 30 allowing students to join.
Wrestling emphasizes taking control of your opponent and pinning both of their shoulder blades onto the mat to win the match. You’ll be going against people in your weight class all over the state. You may also enter local tournaments hosted by different high schools around the area. Silver Creek High School hosted a local tournament on Oct, 8. Anyone with a USA wrestling card can join the tournament.

As the offseason comes to an end the Silver Creek wrestling team has been preparing for the upcoming wrestling season. During the offseason, the team did cardio and lots of technique work. Coach Omar Armenta is making sure the team is ready for this season by having the team go on runs before wrestling. Going on long runs helps increase your stamina, allowing you to run and wrestle for longer. On non-run days the team would just go through the warm up together, then do sprints around the mat, and upper body calisthenics exercises. Like push ups, v-ups, sit-ups, and drivers which will work many muscle groups.
When the season officially begins, the team will go to various tournaments against other schools. Along with bigger tournaments traveling out of the city will be necessary. The first official practice will start on Monday Oct, 30. 5 practices a week will also be in action on Monday Oct, 30.
Anyone can join the team even if you’ve never wrestled before. If you join, the team will teach you how to wrestle. You should join the wrestling team if you want to do a school sport, build a healthy body/get fit, lose weight, or find enjoyment in wrestling. There are plenty of weight classes for everyone to compete in. You may have to gain or lose weight depending on what weight classes are needed but you won’t have to worry that much about it. Since there are many weight classes and everyone is needed in at least one of them you won’t have to worry too much about your weight.
As the wise Coach Omar Armenta says, “Do it or do not. There is no try.” What he means is that he wants your full commitment if you plan to join wrestling.
