NHS Secretary? Soccer Star? Silver Creek Cross Country and Track and Field First Place? Donovan Ly is All of the Above.

SAN JOSE, CALIF— Junior, Donovan Ly of Silver Creek High School has had a lot of success in the classroom and on the athletic fields in the past two years, but he is far from finished. He is always in search of a challenge. Ly is a drive student-athlete, a three-sport athlete, and the National Honor Society leading secretary.

“I like to stay motivated by seeking out challenges whether it’s challenges as an athlete on the field, or in the classroom, or the community by trying to help others and do my part.”

Donovan Ly

Ly competes in three sports, soccer, track and field, and cross country and he is exceptional at each. He has qualified for CCS in each sport. Ly and the varsity boys soccer team qualified for CCS semifinals for the first time in over a decade! As well as a successful soccer career, Ly wrapped up an impressive first season in track and field, running a 4:46 mile, and a 2:03 half mile (top 15 half mile in school history!) as a sophomore, climbing to CCS finals. On Sept. 14, one of his most recent meets to date, Ly had finished first place at the first cross country meet of the season, helping Silver Creek earn a first-place title. With all of his success, Ly stated he doesn’t have a favorite sport. “For me, each sport that I play represents a different challenge.” Along with finding challenges, Ly always finds appreciation for the same thing even in different sports: his teammates and his coaches, “For soccer, I was lucky enough to play with an awesome group of teammates and have an awesome coach.” Ly also expressed appreciation for his track and field and cross-country teammates. “I’m really lucky to have awesome teammates who push me in workouts and coaches as well,” said Ly.

As well as being a stellar athlete, Ly takes serious pride in the classroom. He has a 4.0 GPA and holds the responsibility of being the leading secretary of the National Honor Society (NHS) at Silver Creek. His role as Secretary is to do service, work with other members, and uphold the four pillars of the National Honor Society, scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Ly is a very successful and incredibly hard worker, but even he gets put in high-pressure situations. He explains he stays focused, “I like to remind myself of all of the hard work that I’ve put in before that… Gameday is really just a day to showcase what you have been working on.” The goal of the National Honor Society is to help the community and recognize students who commit to scholarship and service. Ly had first joined NHS because of his friends, but he had found like-minded people, which kept him there to stay. Along with being an excellent athlete and student, Ly has many hobbies and interests. Ly plays two instruments, the piano and the violin. He also enjoys reading and spending time with his friends.

No matter the situation, Ly is always in search of a challenge. “ I like to stay motivated by seeking out challenges whether it’s challenges as an athlete on the field, or in the classroom, or the community by trying to help others and do my part.” To be successful, challenges will need to be something that needs to be faced, Donovan Ly has figured that out and is exceeding expectations.
