SAN JOSE, CALIF.— Elvis Torres, a senior at Silver Creek High School, has been a part of Silver Creek’s basketball team for all four years of his high school career and has grown to love weight lifting.
Torres first started basketball in sixth grade and has been playing the sport since then. In basketball, Torres’ would play wherever he was needed when his teammates faced injuries, stating that it was a nice little challenge for him. In the beginning of quarantine Torres started to gain a new hobby, weight lifting. He started weight lifting in order to prepare himself for basketball. “I love it when I progress through my workouts, and the way my body looks. The soreness you get after is a nice feeling that lets me know that I worked hard,” says Torres.
When he started his senior year in high school, he decided to join track and field to experience playing the sport. During track and fields’ season, Torres would participate in triple jump, long jump, 800 meters, and the 4×4 and 4×1.
Torres has also grown to appreciate the environment of playing sports saying that his teammates are supportive, competitive, and funny. Torres is also thankful for his coaches and teammates who give all their effort to help him improve. In school, his parents encourage and motivate him to be the best that he can be. After high school, Torres is considering going to Foothill Community College and is interested in either being an athletic trainer and then a physical therapist because he wants to help people progress in their fitness journey.
During his high school years, Torres has had his share of experiences at Silver Creek including his most memorable moment at Silver Creek. His favorite class in school is Physical Education for third and fourth year students since he likes being able to do weight training and running. Torres describes high school as a learning environment that also teaches you life lessons and a place where you can make new friends and memories. However, he regrets not being on the top of his class Junior year which made him feel like he had only done the bare minimum. On the lighter side, Torres wishes for the school to open the restrooms more.

When asked about his most cherished high school moment Torres talks about his Senior Night basketball game. “My most cherished moment of high school would be my basketball senior night, because it was something I’ve been a part of since freshman year. It was nice to see all the support from the school and it made me happy,” Torres remarked.
To finalize his experience at Silver Creek, Torres states, “I’m really happy about how my time with Silver Creek went. Obviously it wasn’t perfect, but I’ve learned from my mistakes. The people I met through Silver Creek were really life changing, and they are part of the reason why I am who I am today.”
