SAN JOSE, CALIF.– Throughout the exciting first month of the MLB season, there has been an abundance of surprises, controversies, and astounding plays. From the Cincinnati Reds horrendous start, to the altercation between Yankees fans and the Guardians outfielders, this season has had it all, and it’s only the beginning of May.
During the April 23 game between the Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees, the home fans at Yankee Stadium got in a heated altercation with the Guardians outfielders, specifically center fielder Myles Straw. Straw had some not-so friendly comments to yell to the fans in right field, after Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan got hurt. The fans started to throw bottles, cans and food at the injured Kwan, and it escalated to the point where Straw scaled the wall to get face to face with the fans.
On a brighter note, some teams have gotten off to a hot start. Topping the standings as of May 10, 2022 are the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and surprisingly, the Los Angeles Angels. Turning the spotlight to the shocking Angels, they have gotten off to a 20-11 start, putting them alone on top of the AL West, the division that features the most shining stars, including Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani and Marcus Semien. The Angels have two of the aforementioned superstars, Trout and Ohtani. Therefore, their offensive output is not surprising compared to the pitching that has been lackluster in the previous seasons. The Angels have featured superb pitching so far this season, with breakout stars by the names of Patrick Sandoval and Oliver Ortega. Along with this, the two-way player, Ohtani has also pitched well, with veteran righty Noah Syndergaard, finishing the one-two punch.
Along with all the crazy stuff that has happened, there has been a plethora of amazing plays to start the 2022 season, ranging from out of this world hitting performances to great diving plays on the field. Highlighting this list is Kansas City Royals rookie sensation Bobby Witt Jr., Witt has started off his career with a bang on the field, but not so much on the plate. Whilst in a game between the Royals and the Guardians, Witt Jr. made an amazing diving stop to rob Guardians second baseman Owen Miller of a single.
